Sarvanga Bashpa Swedana is a full-body herbal steam therapy from classical Ayurveda.
At Vedic Suttra Wellness Center in Sector 93, Noida, it is planned and supervised
by Dr. Anu Jaiswal (BAMS), who has more than two decades of Ayurvedic practice.
The name explains the therapy. Sarvanga means the whole body, Bashpa means steam or vapour, and Swedana means inducing sweat. Put together, it is a sweating therapy in which the entire body, except the head, is exposed to steam from a boiling herbal decoction.
Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita describe Swedana as one of the two main preparatory therapies (Purvakarma) before Panchakarma, the other being Snehana, or oil application. The texts divide Swedana into two broad types:
In Ayurvedic terms, aggravated doshas and undigested metabolic waste (Ama) settle in the body’s fine channels (srotas) and cause pain, stiffness and heaviness. Heat and moisture soften and loosen this build-up, widen the channels and move the doshas from the tissues towards the digestive tract, from where Panchakarma can remove them.
In simple physical terms, the warm steam raises skin temperature, widens blood vessels, increases blood flow to the muscles and joints, relaxes muscle tension and starts sweating. This is why people usually feel lighter, looser and more relaxed after a session.
Lower back pain, neck pain and sciatica
Osteoarthritis and joint stiffness
Frozen shoulder and muscle spasms
Body ache and fatigue from long desk
hours
Recurring cold, sinus heaviness and congestion
Stress, poor sleep and tension held in the body
Every therapy plan is made by Dr. Anu Jaiswal, BAMS, not by a spa menu.
The steam decoction is chosen for your condition.
Our team is trained in classical Panchakarma methods.
Follow-up consultations by video or phone.
Dr. Anu Jaiswal checks your body type (Prakriti), current complaints, blood pressure and medical history. She confirms the therapy suits you and selects the herbs for your steam.
Swedana almost always follows Abhyanga, a warm medicated oil massage. The oil softens the tissues so the steam can work better.
You sit or lie inside a wooden steam chamber (Swedana Peti) with your head outside. Herbal steam fills the chamber for 10 to 20 minutes until sweating begins and the body feels light. A therapist monitors you throughout and stops the session if you feel discomfort, thirst or dizziness.
The therapist wipes off the sweat and oil. You rest for 10 to 15 minutes before taking a warm water bath. A full session, including Abhyanga and steam, usually takes 60 to 90 minutes.

A spa steam bath uses plain water vapour and often covers the head. Sarvanga Bashpa Swedana uses steam from a herbal decoction chosen by an Ayurvedic doctor, keeps the head outside the chamber and is usually given after a medicated oil massage as part of a treatment plan.
The steam itself lasts about 10 to 20 minutes. With consultation checks, Abhyanga and rest, plan for 60 to 90 minutes at the centre.
It is safe for most healthy adults when an Ayurvedic doctor checks you first and a trained therapist stays with you. It is not advised during pregnancy, with uncontrolled blood pressure or heart disease, or in the other conditions listed on this page.
Yes. Many people take it on its own for body ache, stiffness or relaxation. It is also given as a preparatory step before Panchakarma.
Sweating causes a temporary loss of water weight, not fat. As part of a Kapha-reducing plan with diet and other therapies, it can support weight management, but it is not a weight loss treatment by itself.
We provide disposable undergarments and towels. Remove jewellery and bring a change of clothes.
Most people feel lighter and less stiff after the first session. For long-standing pain or stiffness, the doctor usually advises a course of 7 to 14 sessions.
Yes. A short consultation at Vedic Suttra confirms the therapy suits you and lets the doctor choose the right herbs for your steam.
