Ayurvedic Treatment for Sinusitis

What is Sinusitis?

Sinuses are small air-filled spaces present inside the bones of the face, around the forehead, nose, and eyes.

They play an important role in breathing by filtering the air, keeping it moist, and producing a thin layer of mucus that traps dust, bacteria, and other particles.

Sinusitis is a condition in which these sinuses become inflamed or blocked.

According to Ayurveda, sinus problems are mainly linked to an imbalance of Kapha dosha, which controls mucus and lubrication in the body.

Under normal conditions, mucus flows smoothly and drains out through the nose without causing any problem.

However, when there is a Kapha imbalance, it leads to swelling (inflammation) and excess mucus production. This causes blockage in the sinus passages, resulting in congestion, pressure, and discomfort.

When this blockage happens, mucus starts collecting inside, creating pressure in the head and face. This also allows bacteria to grow, which leads to infection.

In simple words, sinusitis happens when the sinuses get blocked and the natural flow of mucus stops, causing congestion, pressure, and discomfort.

Symptoms of Sinusitis

Nasal congestion

When the nose gets infected or builds up mucus in excessive amount, it makes the lining of the nose swell, which makes your nose feel blocked or stuffed. This makes breathing quite a bit more difficult as the nose is blocked or there is nasal congestion.

Thick nasal discharge

A normal person’s mucus is transparent or white in color, and its texture is smooth, thin, and slightly slippery, which is why it comes out of the nose easily without causing any trouble. But in a person with sinusitis, the mucus becomes yellow or green in color and has a thick texture.

Facial Pain or pressure

The mucus of a person who is facing sinusitis is thick, and when any dust and bacteria start collecting inside the sinuses, it starts building up, making the nose blocked. This starts causing inflammation on the face, especially around the eyes, cheeks, and forehead.

Headache aggravated by movement

We know when sinuses hit or get triggered, it builds up more mucus, causing blockage in the sinus. Well, the blocked areas on the face, like the forehead, the area around the eyes, and the cheeks, are feeling heavy. Any movement of the face or head can cause pain in the forehead and near the eye area. And with more movement, it starts getting more intense.

Post-nasal drip into throat

Usually, the excess mucus comes out from the nose, but when sinusitis gets triggered, the first symptom many can face is that the mucus goes backwards into the throat instead of coming out from the nose. And this can become very irritating as it does happen frequently, and the person can face discomfort and continuously clear their throat.

Fatigue or general discomfort

When sinusitis hits, it can make you feel tired or low on energy. A person who suffers from sinusitis has to deal with poor sleep as you have to wake up at night to clean out your nose, or because of difficulty breathing. The infection that triggers sinusitis also affects your health, and in some cases, people get a 101-degree temperature, causing weakness.

Ayurvedic treatment for Sinusitis

Nasya Therapy

Nasya Therapy helps to effectively clear chronic sinusitis, nasal congestion, allergies, and reduce mucus.

In Nasya therapy, herbal oils are used, which clear the mucus. At first, the patient lies down comfortably, with the head slightly tilted back.

Warm herbal oil is used, and massage is done on the face, which helps in relaxing the muscles, and mild steam is also given, which loosens the mucus.

After the patient is properly relaxed and comfortable, a few drops of herbal oil are put into each nostril one by one.

The patient is then told to inhale slowly and gently so the oil can go inside without causing problems. Then, a light hand massage is given on the forehead If the mucus or oil comes into the throat, the person has to spit it out.

If something feels stuck, gargling with warm water is also advised.

This process not only helps in clearing the congestion but also gives relief from itchiness and a runny nose.

Sinusitis Mobile

Herbal Steam Therapy (Swedana)

Steam therapy always works when it comes to easing sinusitis, but Ayurvedic herbal steam therapy works even better.

It is a very common yet effective therapy where hot boiling water is taken, and herbs like tulsi, eucalyptus, and mint are added to it. This steam is then given to the sinusitis patient.

When inhaled, this steam goes inside your nose and sinuses. It loosens the thick mucus that was stuck inside, making it easy to come out.

This steam also reduces inflammation and gives relief from pain.

Jal Neti

Jal Neti is an old traditional yogic way to cleanse the nasal passages by using a saline solution, which is warm salt water.

In this step, a special pot is used, which is called a neti pot. First, you fill the neti pot with warm salt water, then start gently pouring it into one nostril and let it flow from the other nostril.

In this step, you have to breathe continuously through your mouth and avoid breathing through the nose.

This process flushes down the dust, excess mucus, and allergens that were present in your nostrils before they can worsen your condition and cause any other problem.

In sinusitis, the nasal passages often get blocked due to thick mucus and pollutants. Jal Neti helps to remove this blockage, making the breathing path clear and smooth.

When done regularly, Jal Neti can help keep your nasal passages clear, reducing the chances of allergic triggers and congestion.

Panchakarma Detox

Panchakarma is a therapy that deep cleans your body and helps remove toxins. When sinusitis becomes very severe or chronic, Panchakarma detox therapy is recommended.

In sinusitis, a lot of mucus and toxins get stuck inside the body. Medicines, nasal sprays, and other treatments can reduce this buildup, but Panchakarma helps to clear this buildup from the root.

A therapy called Nasya is suggested in Panchakarma, where herbal oil is put inside the nose to clear the blockages.

Another therapy, called Vamana, is also done. In Vamana, therapeutic vomiting is included to remove excess mucus and toxins from the body.

A few days before this process, the patient is given special food and some herbal oils, which help loosen the mucus and toxins and bring them into the stomach.

Then, herbal medicines, mostly in liquid form, are given, and under professional supervision, controlled vomiting is done, which expels toxins and mucus from the body.

These therapies clean the system, reduce mucus, and balance the doshas (especially Kapha).

Diet and Lifestyle

A person who is suffering from sinusitis should think twice before consuming food, as even simple food can trigger sinusitis and make the condition even worse.

The food options one should avoid are very common in our daily diet, but avoiding them can improve your condition in the long term.

Cold foods and beverages, ice creams, and curd, which is mostly taken with every meal, work the worst, especially if eaten at night.

Oily, fried, and very heavy meals should also be avoided. And at last, spicy food is something that can easily trigger your sinusitis.

Instead of these,

  • Try consuming herbal teas and warm, freshly prepared food.
  • Make sure to include ginger, turmeric, and black pepper in your food, but again in limited quantities. These food items will not only keep your nose and sinuses calm but also improve your digestion and immunity.

This review comes from a place of genuine fondness, comfort and fantastic results/experience at Vedic Sutra. I am an individual who was not comfortable with massages because it often resulted in muscle pain. After much due dilligence, vedic sutra is what I chose, and its been one of my best decisions. Have been a regular at VS for the last 2 years now. Vedic sutra is not a plain as day commercial shop. Its a Healthcare center, where one is diagnosed and treated by Dr.Anu Jaiswal, who btw is an institution in herself. Supported by Dr.Rashmi and her expertly trained staff, they have rid me of my neck and lower back pain, hairloss and dry skin. This was just the beginning. The panchkarma treatment, not only resulted in weightloss(4kgs) and inchloss, but catapult me into a healthier lifestyle. Infact, it has helped my friends heal from sciatica pain, snoring issues, crackling knees and even anxiety/ stress.

If you need to do yourself a solid, invest in yourself and get an appointment at Vedic.

Thank you Dr.Anu, Dr. Rashmi and Radhaji.
