What Is Body Composition Analysis?

Body composition analysis splits your body weight into its main parts: fat, muscle, water, and bone and minerals. Two people can weigh the same and look and feel very different, because one carries more muscle and the other more fat. Knowing the split is the first step towards changing it.

Our analyser uses Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). You stand barefoot on the machine and hold two handles. A very small, safe electrical signal passes through the body. Water and muscle let the signal pass easily, while fat slows it down. From this, the machine works out your fat, muscle and water levels in a minute or two. You feel nothing.

Why Body Composition Matters More Than Weight or BMI

  • Weight changes from day to day with water, food, salt and the menstrual cycle. It cannot tell fat loss from muscle loss.
  • BMI uses only height and weight. A muscular person can be labelled overweight, while a slim person with little muscle and high body fat can be labelled healthy.
  • Body composition shows body fat percentage and where the fat sits, including visceral fat around the organs. These are linked more closely to diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease than weight alone.

What Your Report Shows

Measure What it tells you
Body fat mass and body fat percentage How much of your weight is fat, compared with the healthy range for your age and sex
Skeletal muscle mass The muscle that moves your body and burns energy; low muscle slows the metabolism
Visceral fat level Fat stored deep in the belly around the organs, the type most linked to lifestyle disease
Total body water Whether you are well hydrated, and any fluid retention
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) Calories your body burns at complete rest, used to plan your diet
Segmental analysis Muscle and fat in each arm, each leg and the trunk, to spot imbalances
BMI and target weight Your BMI, plus how much fat to lose or muscle to gain

How the Test Works at Vedic Suttra

Check-in

We record your height, age and any health conditions, and check that you have followed the preparation steps below.

The Scan

You remove your shoes, socks and any metal jewellery, stand on the analyser and hold the handles. The scan takes about one to two minutes.

Your Printed Report

You receive a printed report straight away, with each measure shown against its healthy range.

Doctor Consultation

Dr. Anu Jaiswal reviews your report, combining the numbers with an Ayurvedic assessment of your Prakriti, Agni, and current imbalances to explain what to change first.

How to Prepare for the Test

Avoid exercise, steam or sauna for at least 12 hours before.

Avoid alcohol for 24 hours and tea or coffee for 4 hours before.

Use the toilet just before the test.

For repeat tests, come at the same time of day.

If possible, book outside your menstrual period, as fluid changes can affect readings.

Wear light clothes and remove watches, rings and other metal.

How Accurate Is Body Composition Analysis?

No home scale or clinic machine is perfect. Medical-grade BIA analysers usually read within 2 to 3% of a DEXA scan, the hospital reference test, which makes them reliable for most people when the preparation steps are followed. BIA is most useful for tracking change over time on the same machine, which is how we use it in our programmes.
