Ayurvedic Strategies for Acid Reflux Relief – Dosha Approach To Wellness

Acid reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux (GER), occurs when stomach acid flows in the wrong direction into the esophagus, a crucial pathway linking the mouth to the stomach.

Functioning as a guardian, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a muscular ring, typically permits food entry into the stomach while preventing stomach contents from refluxing upward. However, in cases of acid reflux, this guardian, the LES, may intermittently weaken, permitting stomach acid to travel in the wrong direction.

This common scenario underscores the intricate nature of our digestive system. Disruptions in this process can result in discomfort.

Causes of Acid Reflux

  • Dietary Factors
  • Hiatal Hernia
  • Smoking
  • Connective Tissue Disorders
  • Delayed Stomach Emptying (Gastroparesis
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Certain Medications

Symptoms Of Acid Reflux

Burning Sensation

The prevalent Acid reflux symptom is a sharp, burning sensation experienced in the stomach, chest, or even the throat, commonly known as heartburn.

This discomfort arises as the acidic content from the stomach literally causes a burning effect on the tissues of the esophagus.

Backwash

Backwash, also known as regurgitation, occurs when food or liquid from the stomach flows back into the throat, even hours after eating. While occasional instances of regurgitation are considered normal, experiencing this phenomenon daily warrants consultation with a doctor for further evaluation and appropriate guidance.

Asthma

Acid reflux can worsen asthma. Individuals with GERD or acid reflux often experience regurgitation, where stomach acid and digestive juices move back into the tube connecting the mouth to the stomach (the esophagus).

In some cases, these stomach contents may reach the airways, a process known as micro aspiration. This can irritate the bronchial tubes in the lungs, causing asthma symptoms to worsen or exacerbating existing asthma.

Sore Throat

Sore throat can result from regurgitated acid reaching the throat during acid reflux. This may cause a sensation of a lump and difficulty swallowing.

Such reflux incidents in the throat often occur during sleep, contributing to discomfort and irritation.

Non-cardiac Chest Pain

People with acid reflux often experience a sharp pain in the esophagus, leading to confusion with cardiac chest pain, as both trigger similar nerve responses.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Acid Reflux

We have enlisted Acid reflux treatments:

Herbal Remedies

Pippali (long pepper) emerges as a stellar solution for acid reflux. With potent chemicals that boost digestion and harmonize pitta doshas. Herbal remedies for GERD stand as a powerhouse remedy.

Next in line is Tulsi, the renowned holy basil, offering a spectrum of relief for various gastrointestinal issues. Packed with potent carminative properties, Tulsi’s volatile oils combat flatulence, gas, and hyperacidity.

Finally, the hydrating and nutrient-rich Ash gourd aids in reducing acidity with its abundant phytonutrients.

Diet For Acid Reflux in Ayurveda

Ayurveda recommends embracing the pathya diet while avoiding apathya (unwholesome food) to support digestive and excretory systems during Panchakarma.

Following the pathya diet aids in restoring the balance of Annavaha Srotas (digestive system) and Purishavaha Srotas (excretory system).

This wholesome diet helps maintain the health of dhatus (fundamental components), minimizing dosha imbalances, promoting vitality, and ensuring the well-being of bodily channels.

Deep Detoxification

Embark on a journey of deep detoxification with the revered ancient therapy of Panchakarma. This transformative process eliminates toxins, accumulate ama (undigested waste), purifying the digestive system.

Experience a cleanse that not only detoxifies but also diminishes the frequency and intensity of acid reflux episodes, promoting holistic well-being.

Restoring Dosha Balance

In Ayurveda, acid reflux is attributed to an imbalance in the pitta dosha, representing the body’s water and fire elements. To restore harmony, Ayurvedic Panchakarma treatments like Vamana and Virechana are employed.

These therapies effectively soothe the heightened pitta dosha, bringing it back into equilibrium and reducing symptoms of acid reflux.

Stress Management

Ayurvedic stress management embraces the profound practices of Nasya and Basti, two key Panchakarma treatments renowned for their effectiveness.

These therapies work synergistically to bring a calming influence on our nervous system, significantly reducing stress and anxiety levels.

Tissue Repair

Tissue repair is crucial because acid can harm esophageal tissues. Panchakarma therapy accelerates healing and regeneration, expediting the recovery process and minimizing the risk of complications. This is why many believe it surpasses allopathy, offering a reassuring guarantee for a healthier future.
