Ayurvedic Panchakarma Treatment for Acid Reflux

In Ayurveda, Panchakarma therapy is considered a traditional method used to support the body’s natural healing process. It is an ancient treatment that focuses on detoxifying the body and improving internal balance. Panchakarma helps remove accumulated toxins and supports better digestion.

The treatment also helps balance Pitta dosha, which is often associated with conditions like acidity and acid reflux. By helping restore this balance, Panchakarma therapy may help reduce symptoms such as heartburn, burning sensation, and digestive discomfort.

The Panchakarma therapy is a 3-step process

Purvakarma (Preparation Phase)

Paschat Karma (Post-Treatment Care)

In this step, the body is prepared for the therapy. The patient is first helped to relax so that warm herbal oil can be applied to the body. This oil massage helps nourish the body and improve blood circulation.

After the oil massage, steam therapy is given. The steam helps open the body channels and supports the removal of toxins from the body, which may help reduce acidity.

These two procedures are called Snehana (oil massage) and Swedana (steam therapy).

Pradhan karma ( Main treatment phase)

This is the main stage of Panchakarma therapy where specific treatments are used to help remove toxins from the body and support better digestion.

Vamana (Therapeutic Vomiting):
This procedure helps remove excess Kapha and toxins from the upper digestive tract, which may help reduce symptoms associated with acid reflux.

Virechana (Purgation Therapy):
In this therapy, natural herbal medicines are used to cleanse the digestive system. It helps remove accumulated waste from the body and supports better digestive balance.

Basti (Enema Therapy):
This therapy uses herbal preparations through enemas to help balance the Vata dosha and support proper digestive function, which may help in reducing reflux-related discomfort.

Pradhan karma ( Main treatment phase)
Paschat Karma (Post-Treatment Care)

Paschat Karma (Post-Treatment Care)

This is the care given after the main Panchakarma treatment to help the body recover and maintain digestive balance.

Dietary Adjustments:
A personalised diet plan is suggested to support digestion and reduce acidity. The focus is on foods that help calm excess Pitta and are easy for the stomach to digest.

Lifestyle Recommendations:
Simple lifestyle practices such as yoga, proper meal timing, and mindful eating may be suggested to support digestion and reduce the chances of acid reflux returning.

Panchakarma treatment not only helps reduce the symptoms of acid reflux but also supports long-term digestive health by correcting the underlying imbalance in the body.

Frequently Asked Questions

Acid reflux is called “Amlapitta” in Ayurveda. It is made from two Sanskrit words “Amla”which means acidic, and Pitta, which is the dosha responsible for digestion, metabolism, and heat in the body.

Ayurvedic treatment cannot cure the issue in just one day. The duration of the treatment depends on the severity of the symptoms and how long the person has been experiencing them. Each patient responds differently to the treatment, so the time required may vary from person to person.

Apart from medicines, therapies, and everything, only you can cure your body by taking care of just 2 things: your diet and your lifestyle.

You can cure it by eating healthy meals that do not contain too much oil or spices, are not heavy, and are not very acidic.

And when it comes to lifestyle changes, you can add 30 minutes of walking after meals, avoid lying down just after your meals, and do some yoga. And with time, these changes will cure your body.

Acid reflux symptoms are quite common and can sometimes be confusing to understand. Many people ignore them, thinking it is just normal acidity or a minor stomach issue.

Some common signs include acid coming into the mouth when you lie down, frequent heartburn, bad breath even after brushing daily, and feeling bloated or heavy in the stomach regularly.

If you are suffering from acid reflux, then you should consume healthy food items and stay away from foods that can trigger it, such as:

Spicy foods, fried food, chocolates, carbonated drinks, raw garlic or onion, fast or processed food, alcohol, tea, and coffee.
