Types of Slip Disc

Bulging Disc

This is a gentle outward swelling of the disc's outer ring without a rupture. It is often the initial stage of a slipped disc where the disc protrudes but the outer layer remains intact.

Protruded Disc

The gel-like center (nucleus pulposus) pushes outward and displaces mildly but is still contained within the outer layer. This is a progression from bulging.

Extruded Disc

The nucleus significantly protrudes out of the disc with a narrow connection to the disc remaining, often compressing nerves more severely.

Herniated Disc

The outer layer tears, allowing the inner gel-like nucleus to push through, potentially compressing nearby nerves.

Prolapsed Disc

The nucleus moves closer to or to the edge of the outer layer, causing some instability but the outer layer is not fully ruptured.

Fragmented Disc

Pieces of the disc break off from the main structure, often a result of untreated extrusion, causing the most severe symptoms.

Causes of Slip Disc

Age-related wear and tear

Age-related wear and tear

As people age, spinal discs lose water content and flexibility, making them prone to degeneration and tears even with minor strains.

Repetitive strain

Repetitive strain

Frequent bending, twisting, heavy lifting, or physically demanding activities can weaken discs over
time.

Injury or trauma

Injury or trauma

Sudden excessive strain, heavy lifting with improper technique, accidents, or falls can cause discs to slip or rupture.

Genetics

Genetics

A family history of disc problems can increase
susceptibility.

Excess weight

Excess weight

Being overweight puts extra stress on spinal discs, increasing the risk of herniation.

Inactivity

Inactivity

A sedentary lifestyle weakens muscles and spinal support, raising the likelihood of disc injury.

Smoking

Smoking

Smoking decreases blood supply to discs, preventing proper repair and accelerating degeneration.

Prolonged sitting or driving

Prolonged sitting or driving

Staying in the same position for long periods, especially with poor posture, increases spinal pressure.
