Ayurvedic Treatment of Dermatitis

Ayurveda classifies the energies of the body as fire, water, air and space, which translates to an imbalance within the body and therefore leads to conditions such as dermatitis. Fire and water constitute the Pitta, Air and Space constitute the Vata. These energies can cause inflammation and result in the disruption of their balance, leading the body to face eczema and atopic dermatitis.

Let’s speak specifically about the treatment of dermatitis. In Ayurvedic Panchakarma therapy is known to be quite effective and can be used to treat all types of dermatitis and dermatitis allergic skin conditions.

Understanding Dermatitis

Dermatitis meaning refers to inflamed skin, one of its dominant characteristics. Blisters can sometimes develop, which, along with skin appearing red and itchy, causes the skin to dry. In modern medical science, dermatitis is viewed as an allergic inflammation of the skin and can be supported by a host of different factors such as environmental irritants, autoimmune responses, and genetics.

The root causes of dermatitis are:

Genetic FactorsIf an individual has a family history of asthma, hay fever, and food allergies, they are highly likely to develop atopic dermatitis disease. This is referred to as a genetic predisposition. Mutations in the filaggrin gene incur damages to skin barriers, which allow for the skin to be infected by bacteria and pushed towards chronic inflammatory skin conditions.

Immune System DysfunctionImpaired atopic dermatitis falls under the category of dermatitis diseases and occurs when the immune system improperly registers the skin cells as allergens and the skin as a harmful foreign body. This results in red, swollen, and itchy skin as inflammatory molecules are released to manage inflammatory dermatitis.

Environmental and Lifestyle TriggersSome other physical or mental stresses such as allergens, weather irritants, as well as harsh chemicals, soaps, and even perfumes contribute greatly to the triggers of stress-induced dermatitis. Ayurvedic atopic dermatitis treatments focus on removing such causative triggers through detox and lifestyle corrections.

Microbial Factors – Skin inflammation known as seborrheic dermatitis may also be triggered or exacerbated by bacterial infections and the overgrowth of microorganisms such as Malassezia and Staphylococcus Aureus. In atopic dermatitis and eczema, there is an overgrowth of yeast and bacteria that lead to red, oily, flaky patches and increased skin irritability. Ayurvedic herbs and therapies like Panchakarma assist in correcting these microbial imbalances and address the causes of seborrheic dermatitis.

Hormonal Fluctuations – Skin disorders such as dermatitis can worsen during significant life events such as pregnancy, puberty, or menstruation due to underlying aberrations in endocrine levels. During such hormonal changes, the skin might become excessively greasy, flaky with patches of inflammation, or crusted with yellowish scales. Ayurveda treats such problems with holistic approaches like dosha balancing therapies.

Types of Dermatitis

  • Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema)

Atopic dermatitis disease, also known as eczema, causes dry skin, itchy rashes, and skin inflammation. It is often seen developing in childhood and is linked to a family history of allergies, such as asthma or hay fever. This is one of the types of dermatitis that benefits from natural Ayurvedic treatment, especially through Panchakarma for eczema and herbal remedies for skin allergies.

  • Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is associated with greasy, flaky patches and is characteristically located on the scalp, face, and chest. It is related to the overgrowth of Malassezia yeast. Ayurveda recommends detox scalp therapies and skin detox therapies to manage symptoms of dermatitis effectively.

  • Contact Dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is triggered when the skin reacts to irritants or allergens like metals, soaps, or certain plants. Symptoms include redness, itching, and inflammation. Ayurveda treats this through treatment of allergic dermatitis, detoxification, and anti-inflammatory herbs.

  • Dyshidrotic Dermatitis

Dyshidrotic dermatitis is known for itchy, fluid-filled blisters on the palms and soles. Ayurvedic therapy for this type includes herbal poultices and dietary changes to calm Vata dosha.

  • Nummular Dermatitis

Nummular dermatitis appears as round, coin-shaped itchy patches often found on arms, legs, and torso. Ayurvedic treatment for dermatitis includes internal detox and application of herbal ointments.

  • Stasis Dermatitis

Stasis dermatitis happens when poor circulation causes blood to accumulate in the lower legs, leading to skin inflammation. It is common in people with varicose veins. Symptoms include swelling, redness, itching, and the skin may thicken over time. Ayurvedic leg therapies, massage with medicated oils, and Pitta-Kapha balancing treatments are often used.

  • Perioral Dermatitis

People with perioral dermatitis develop red, pimple-like bumps around the mouth and sometimes the eyes or nose region. It can be triggered by factors like stress, hormonal changes, or certain topical treatments. Ayurveda for perioral dermatitis focuses on hormonal balance, digestive detox, and stress-reducing therapies.

  • Neurodermatitis

Neurodermatitis is a chronic skin condition that causes intense, recurring itching, often starting in a specific area like the back of the neck. The itch worsens with stress or irritation. Over time, the skin can become thickened, leathery, or discolored from constant scratching. In Ayurveda, this is managed using Rasayana therapy, mind-calming herbs, and Ayurvedic stress relief techniques.

Symptoms of Dermatitis:

  • Skin Redness

Ayurvedic Treatment of Dermatitis

Ayurveda offers a natural method for the treatment of dermatitis. It involves cleansing the accumulated toxins in the body, known as Ama, and balancing the doshas, particularly Pitta dosha, which is associated with inflammation and heat. Panchakarma is an effective treatment for dermatitis that can help manage its symptoms.

Some of the therapies in Panchakarma for the treatment of dermatitis are:

  • Virechana (Purgation Therapy)

Virechana is one of the key therapies for treating Pitta-related conditions and helps eliminate excessive heat and inflammation from the body. It involves induced vomiting or herbal laxatives to remove toxins from the digestive system, which helps reduce skin redness and irritation in dermatitis.

  • Basti (Medicated Enema Therapy)

Basti is a highly effective therapy for balancing Vata dosha, which is associated with dryness and roughness and can worsen certain types of dermatitis, such as eczema.

Medicated oils and herbal decoctions are delivered via the rectum to detoxify the lower intestines and balance Vata dosha. This therapy helps improve digestive function, thereby reducing skin dryness and enhancing skin health.

  • Abhyanga (Herbal Oil Massage)

Virechana therapy is one of the key therapies for treating Pitta-related conditions and helps eliminate excessive heat and inflammation from the body. This therapy involves induced vomiting or herbal laxatives to remove toxins from the digestive system, which is then helpful in reducing skin redness and irritation in dermatitis.
