The Ayurvedic Theory - Body Composition
As per Ayurvedic principles, every human body is manifested through the five basic elements:
- PRITHVI – Terrestrial Element
- WATER – Liquid Element
- AGNI – Thermal Element
- VAYU – Gaseous Element
- AKASHA – Ethereal Element
A combination of these elements are three doshas (tri-dosha):
- Vata
- Pitta &
- Kapha
- Healthy Body – Equilibrium State of All the Three Doshas
- Diseased Body – Imbalance of the Three Doshas
What is Panchakarma Treatment?
As the name suggests Panchakarma is derived from Sanskrit and is a combination of two wordsÂ
PANCHA = FIVE            +            KARMA = ACTION (TREATMENT)Â
Panchakarma is 5000 years old Ayurvedic detoxification and rejuvenation process which is designed to restore balance and health by removing accumulated toxins and supporting the body’s natural healing abilities. Â
The Panchakarma journey is personalized, gentle, and unfolds in several carefully sequenced stages, each with its own purpose and benefits.Â
Panchakarma Process
Poorva Karma(Preparation Phase)
The preparation phase is designed to prepare the body for Panchakarma Treatment. The procedure includes steps that are meant to soften the stored toxicity in the body that helps to release them out of the body during the main procedure. This therapy is also called Snehana (oleation) that refers to both internal and external oleation of the body.
Pradhana Karma(Principal Procedures)
The Pradhana Karma is divided into the following five Panchakarma Treatments:

Vaman (Therapeutic Vomiting)
Vaman treatment is targeted to remove Kapha Dosha out of the body.
This treatment involves therapeutic vomiting in order to eliminate excess of mucus from the respiratory and gastro-intestinal tract that causes excess of the kapha. The Vamana treatment helps to dislodge the toxins mainly from the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract.
After Vaman Treatment, the sinuses are cleared which, in turn, provides relief from congestion, wheezing and breathlessness. Lightness in the chest is often experienced after undergoing the Vamana therapy.
Virechan (Purgation)
Virechan therapy can be defined as the medicated purgation therapy. The treatment is very useful for patients having High Pitta conditions such as skin disorders, blisters, abscess, liver disorders etc. The Virechana treatment is also very effective if Pitta associated with Kapha, where Pitta is the dominant Dosha such as certain types of vomiting, hyper-acidity, acid peptic disorders, etc. and Pitta associated with Vata, such as gout, a complex form of arthritis.
The treatment is given to clear toxins from the liver and gall bladder & the whole gastro-intestinal tract. This treatment is usually given for three days after the Vamana treatment.

Nasyam (Nasal Administration)
As the name suggests, Nasya Treatment involves nasal administration of medication. It helps to treat disorders of the head and neck region.
The medicinal oils that are applied throughout the nasal passages helps to treat the clear the sinuses and draining of excess mucus.
The patients suffering from chronic sinus problems, allergies, congestion, migraine headaches, convulsions, chronic rhinitis, respiratory ailments and certain eye and ear problems are benefitted using Nasyam Therapy.
Basti (Enema)
Basti is one of the most powerful of all the main five procedures of Panchakarma. The Basti Therapy also known as anema, is the introduction of herbal decoctions and medicated oils into the colon through the rectum.
The Basti Treatment is specifically useful for Vata Dosha of our body. Vata is the main aetiological factor in the disease growth. The treatment helps to cure chronic constipation, Sciatica, Rheumatism, Gout, Arthritis, Low back pain, Hemiplegia, Sarcoidosis, PCOD, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis , Dystrophy and Atrophy of nerves and muscles, Collagen Vascular Disease and Autonomic disorders.
The Basti Treatment flushes out the intestinal tract, accessing the deeper tissues and eliminating toxins from the body.

Shirodhara (Nervous Rejuvenation)
As the name suggests, Nasya Treatment involves nasal administration of medication. It helps to treat disorders of the head and neck region.
The medicinal oils that are applied throughout the nasal passages helps to treat the clear the sinuses and draining of excess mucus.
The patients suffering from chronic sinus problems, allergies, congestion, migraine headaches, convulsions, chronic rhinitis, respiratory ailments and certain eye and ear problems are benefitted using Nasyam Therapy.
Paschat Karma (Post-therapy Procedures)
The post-therapy procedures, also considered the rejuvenation phase, is the time to implement the procedures that one must follow to sustain the effect of Panchakarma Kriya. Ayurveda emphasizes the need to follow the following practices & procedures to prevent unhealthy accumulation in the body.
